This temple is the avatar sthalam of Kamban.Kamban medu near the temple is where Kamban lived.Brahma took away all the cows and boys from Krishnan at Gokulam.Krishna created exactly identical cows and boys.Brahma realising his mistake , apologized.At his request,Krishna appeared as Aamaruviappan.The Utsavar is seen with idols of cows and calves ,Rukmani and Satyabhama.Since Prahalada was scared to see the ferocious form of Narasimha he came to pray and Perumal gave him Dharshan as Aamaruviappan.King Uparisavasu obtained a boon that he cannot be defeated in any battle and that the shadow of his chariot cannot be stopped even if he travelled by air.Once when he and his queen were traveling over the temple,queen wanted to worship the perumal.The King said that the shadow of his chariot would destroy all that it touched and thus,many cows were killed.Perumal pressed his right foot down on the shadow and chariot fell into the tank.Looking for help ,king found a small boy tending cows with friends.King agreed to give 1000 pots of butter if he could bring the chariot out of the tank.King could organise only 999 pots of butter and the last one with water.When the boy open the pot of water... It became a pot of butter and the rest were water .King realized that the little boy is perumal himself .Perumal is seen here with right foot at a slightly lower level than his left foot .
The capital of Karikala Chozhan I and the birth place of the great Tamil poet Kamban, Ther Azhundur (Thiru Vazhandur), a Krishnaranya Kshetram, is situated 11kms West of Mayavaram off the Kumbakonam Highway.
